Registrations are again open for the Portuguese as a foreign language course “Aspects of academic writing in Brazilian Portuguese: abstract, review and scientific article” offered by the Institutional Center for Languages and Translation (NILT/SINTER)Registration deadline is 10 July and classes will take place from 15 to 28 July 2022.

The course is being offered to foreign or Brazilian students, researchers and professors who may need an introduction to academic written production in Brazilian Portuguese. The aim is to enable the participants to produce quality academic papers in Brazilian Portuguese, providing them with formal, linguistic and argumentative elements necessary for the writing process.

Course content:

  • Academic genres: abstract, review, article.
  • General characteristics of academic writing: conciseness, clarity, objectivity, impersonality.
  • Strategies to maintain impersonality in academic writing.
  • Textual cohesion and coherence: connectors, modals and anaphoric references.
  • Academic article and its structure: form and content aspects.

The course is structured into three modules, totaling 16 hours, and it has 100 places available.  The classes will be online and the course content and activities will be available on Moodle. To be approved at the end of the course, participants must obtain a minimum grade of 6.0. Participants who complete the mandatory activities with the minimum grade will receive a certificate issued by Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), valid within the Brazilian territory.

Applications open for the “Exámenes de certificación en español: acercamiento” course

The Institutional Center for Languages and Translation (NILT/SINTER) promotes the second edition of the course “Exámenes de certificación en español: acercamiento” [Getting familiar with Spanish proficiency exams].

The course introduces four Spanish proficiency exams (CELU, DELE, SIELE and LAPLE (DLLE/UFSC)), whose certificates are the most required for academic mobility and admission to graduate programs. The objective is to familiarize participants with the exam formats, the types of questions, the skills assessed, the time for completion, the assignment of grades/scores and the conditions of offer and validity of the exams.

Classes will take place between 22 June and 15 July.

Attention: participants must have knowledge of the Spanish language (written and oral comprehension), as the entire course (classes, materials and activities) will be in Spanish.

NILT launches the course “Francophonie et mobilité étudiante”

The Institutional Center for Languages and Translation (NILT/SINTER) promotes the course “Francophonie et mobilité étudiante” [Francophony and student mobility]. The aim of the course is for participants to broaden their knowledge of the French language and become familiar with the francophone university education system. The course is open to the entire university community – students, faculty and staff – and registrations run from 22 May to 1 June 2022.

The course totals eight hours and two groups – with 15 seats each – will be offered. A B1-level proficiency in French is required and the classes will be held in person, with support from the Moodle platform for complementary activities. Group 1: morning period. Classes on 6, 8, 13 and 15 June, from 10 am to 11:30 am.

NILT launches the third edition of the course “Ways and perspectives of studying in Italy – reading and understanding Calls for Application in Italian language”

SINTERThe Institutional Center for Languages and Translation (NILT/SINTER) promotes the third edition of the course “Ways and perspectives of studying in Italy – reading and understanding Calls for Application in Italian language”. The classes will take place from 4 to 31 May and registrations are open until 30 April. The course totals 20 hours.

The initiative seeks to equip the academic community (undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff) and the community in general with the ability to understand Calls for Applications for scholarships in Italian educational institutions. Given the offer of Italian government scholarships for undergraduate exchange, graduate research and cultural exchanges, it is intended that students, at the end of this course, will be able to: 1) easily locate Calls for Applications for Italian government scholarships; 2) understand the Italian higher education system; 3) know the main Italian proficiency tests; 4) recognize characteristics of a Call for Applications, in Italian; 5) autonomously fill in registration forms.

The synchronous classes will take place on the Moodle Groups Platform on 11, 18 and 25 May (Wednesdays), from 10 am to 11:30 am. The course is organized into four learning modules: the first module presents the question “Why study in Italy?” and gives a brief presentation of the Italian higher education system, the division of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and the main Italian language certifications; in the second and third modules, a Call for Applications from the Italian government offered by the Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale (MAECI) will be presented, with vocabulary exploration and instrumentalization on aspects of the Italian language; finally, in the fourth module, there will be a presentation on how to fill in the main data in application forms and equivalency requests, in addition to basic information about student visas. Participants are not required to have previous knowledge of the Italian language and it is important to note that the Call for Applications promoted by the Italian Government has an age restriction.

NILT launches the course “Atelier: Rédiger une lettre de motivation”

The Institutional Center for Languages ​​and Translation (NILT/SINTER) promotes the French course “Atelier: Rédiger une lettre de motivation”. Registrations open on 14 March and classes will take place between 28 March and 20 April.

In this course, the students will have an introduction to intercultural issues involving the preparation of a lettre de motivation (motivation letter) in French; develop comprehension skills to recognize the structure of application letters for internships, courses, among others; and produce a lettre de motivation based on specific linguistic and lexical content that the genre demands in the academic context.

The course requires A2 proficiency level and totals 16 hours. The synchronous classes will take place on 28/03, 30/03, 04/04, 06/04, 11/04, 13/04, 18/04 and 20/04, from 10 am to 11:30 am.

Applications open for the “Italian proficiency tests” course

The Institutional Center for Languages and Translation (NILT/SINTER) promotes the “Italian Proficiency Tests” course, aiming to present the proficiency tests offered by Italian universities in Brazil (CELI, CILS, PLIDA). Registrations are open until 27 March 2022.

In this course, students will understand what these tests are for, how they are carried out and evaluated, and what skills they must have to choose the most appropriate level for their linguistic knowledge. Participants will not learn the language itself, but will become familiar with the functioning of the tests, including their duration, how the questions are presented, which skills are assessed, where the tests are administered and how much they cost. Basic knowledge of Italian is advisable to carry out the course activities, but it is not mandatory.

The course is structured into four study modules, organized in such a way that it presents all the relevant information about each of the proficiency tests. The first module will introduce the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and its relevance to proficiency tests in any language. Then, the most frequently asked questions involving the Italian tests will be answered. In the second, third and fourth modules, the CILS, CELI and PLIDA tests, respectively, will be presented, including their individual characteristics, the test formats, their duration, and the calendar for the current year.

The course totals 20 hours and is composed of synchronous classes and asynchronous readings and activities. To complete the course, it is necessary to carry out the activities proposed at the end of each module (40%) and participate in the synchronous classes (60%). The course will open on Moodle on 29 March. The synchronous classes will take place on 5 April (Modules 1 and 2) and 12 April (Modules 3 and 4), Tuesdays, from 10 am to 11:30 am, via the Zoom platform. The link will be available on Moodle and will also be sent to the students one day before the first synchronous class. Classes will be taught by the instructors Cleide Giacomelli Borraz and Telmo Clos Ambrosini, with the supervision of professor Daniela Bunn (MEN/CED/UFSC).

NILT launches the course “Cultural texts in German: a translation practice”

The Institutional Center for Languages ​​and Translation (NILT/SINTER) promotes the course “Cultural texts in German: a translation practice”. Classes will take place between 7 and 17 March 2022. Students will be able to recognize cultural aspects in German language texts and understand how functionalist theory can help in the translation of these elements.

Registration is open until 6 March and there are 20 available seats. Participants must have knowledge of the German language for the translation tasks. The synchronous classes will be taught via Google Meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 7 pm to 8 pm, by Juliana de Abreu (who holds an undergraduate degree in German Language and Literature and a Master’s and a Doctoral degree in Translation Studies – PGET/UFSC).

On Monday, 7 March, participants will receive a welcome message by email with information about how the course will be organized.
